OUR STORY
Portage Community Church had small beginnings in the back of the Parkway Restaurant (Crimson Room). We began meeting as a group of believers, knowing that God had great plans for Portage and Portage Community Church. The founding families include Deborah Shope, Deborah Scarton, Bobbi Lawrence, Jeff Maul, and Justin and Jaime Irvin.
In March of 2018, we were incorporated and officially became a nondenominational church! Shortly afterwards, we realized the need for a more permanent location, and we began to pray. God answered our prayers when he placed the Church of the Nazarene at 1111 Main Street on our hearts. This church had been vacant for a number of years. We met with the board of this church in May of 2018 and they immediately offered the building for our use free of charge – stating that we would figure out the details later.
Our first official church service took place on July 22, 2018 with Loni Stankan leading the service. In March of 2019, we got word from the board of the Church of the Nazarene and they had decided to gift the building to Portage Community Church. Yes, God provided a building for His church – what an amazing gift and definite reassurance that He had a plan for PCC.
VISION | VALUES | MISSION
PCC’s Vision Statement is: To Grow in Faith, Join in Unity, Reach the Lost, and Serve Those in Need.
We are committed to operating as the body of Christ and reaching our community with the love of Jesus. We believe that this happens in the form of outreach, always looking for ways to serve and provide for people’s basic needs throughout our community, Johnstown, and surrounding areas.
If we had to use one word to describe our hope for our church and our mission, it would be “love”.
We believe in loving Jesus and loving others.
“Love God. Love People.”
